|In today’s society many people know little about the food they eat or where it even comes from! Most food is grown and shipped from regions quite distant from the communities where it is eaten. Locavores are people who try to encourage others to eat as much locally grown food as possible. These people have organized themselves into the Locavore Movement. By discouraging inorganic farming methods, this movement promotes buying and eating locally grown food, believing it to be of a higher nutritional value than shipped products and gentler on the environment since it reduces the burning of fossil fuels.
The Locavore movement is growing in San Diego! San Diego County has many farms that grow food distributed through Farmer’s Markets and shipped directly to local homes. A popular one in my community is New Roots Garden, a community farm in the City Heights area which grows organic and all-natural food.
