During the time in Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge was happening, the only thing that my grandparents depended on was faith, or religion. Their great good friend, whose family members all got murdered during the time in the Khmer Rouge, decided to become a monk. He really loved papaya salad, so my grandparents would always bring him papaya salad or bok lahong. That tradition carried on to me. I will always bring papaya salad every Saturday to the temple to give to the monks.
